Growing up in Florida for 7-year-old Evan means he enjoys tropical weather year round. And with Florida’s sunshine, comes blazing heat. To get out of the heat during the summer Evan loves spending his spare time in the swimming pool.
While Evan was developing through pregnancy, the left side of his heart did not form correctly. Because of that he was diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS), a birth defect that affects normal blood flow through the heart. Ever since his diagnosis, Evan’s life has been far from normal. From doctor’s visits to tough days, he truly deserved something that would help distract him from his reality. He was referred to Make-A-Wish Central and Northern Florida and from there his wish of having a pool would be granted!
Evan’s pool was installed in early 2018, just in time for the weather to start warming up! Since the installation of the pool, Evan has enjoyed swimming with his father and sister. “I love to jump in the pool and make big splashes,” exclaimed Evan. He has also formed several new friendships in his community by inviting the neighborhood kids over to his house to join him for a swim. “I’m so thrilled that Evan will now be able to play outside during the summer and can swim whenever he wants to,” stated Evan’s mother Natasha.
But Make-A-Wish Central and Northern Florida isn’t done yet! Evan’s Wish Granters are working on planning a surprise pool party that Evan and his friends can enjoy together. Because of this wish, Evan and his family now have a backyard pool that they can play in to make memories that will last a lifetime.
This wish was more than a fun surprise for Evan, it will continue to affect him and the family as they push through Evan’s treatments together. It is proven in the 2015 Wish Impact Study that the wish experience will not only have a positive impact on his life but it will improve his physical and mental health; something so critical to children diagnosed with critical illnesses.
Although Evan will continue to battle Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, he will do so with restored strength, joy, and hope developed from the wish experience. Every 38 minutes Make-A-Wish® grants the wish of a child diagnosed with a critical illness in the United States and its territories.
